What is environmentally sustainable heating?

The environmentally sustainability of a heating system is a question of what a heater puts into the environment either during its production, its operation or after its useful life has ended.

The most obvious environmental consideration most people recognise is how cleanly a heater operates in terms of whether consumes fossil fuel either directly (e.g. gas or oil boilers) or indirectly (e.g. electric heating running on non-renewable supply) or whether it requires the use of toxic materials (e.g. refrigerant compressed gas e.g. Heat Pumps).

However, environmental sustainability also extends into the supply chain – in terms of the environmental impact of the production process as well as the longevity and recoverability of the components in the heaters themselves and whether – for example – recyclable packaging is used.

Supply chain considerations also include how much toxic material is used in the heaters and what happens to these toxic materials at the end of the heater’s life.

A third dimension to consider is how cleanly the heating company itself operates, in terms of energy consumption & reduction of waste.
