Those attending the church\u2019s weekly events, including Sunday Service, would often find themselves keeping their coats and hats on while inside. For a church committed to welcoming its wider community, this was something they wanted to change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">At the same time, St Luke\u2019s was keen to reduce its environmental impact and move away from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3799 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.herschel-infrared.co.uk\/heritage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/St-Lukes-Interior-LR.jpg\" alt=\"St Lukes Interior\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.herschel-infrared.co.uk\/heritage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/St-Lukes-Interior-LR.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.herschel-infrared.co.uk\/heritage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/St-Lukes-Interior-LR-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.herschel-infrared.co.uk\/heritage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/St-Lukes-Interior-LR-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.herschel-infrared.co.uk\/heritage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/St-Lukes-Interior-LR-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.herschel-infrared.co.uk\/heritage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/St-Lukes-Interior-LR-560x373.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Moving towards a fully electric church<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">As part of a wider programme of building improvement works, St Luke\u2019s became a Net Zero Carbon Programme Demonstrator Church.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This provided \u00a350,000 of funding through the Net Zero Programme, alongside \u00a336,000 from the Benefact Trust, helping the church make significant improvements to its building and replace its reliance on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">After exploring a number of heating options, the church chose a combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herschel-infrared.co.uk\/heritage\/halo-infrared-heater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herschel-infrared.co.uk\/business\/aspect-xl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aspect<\/a> infrared heaters from Herschel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Unlike conventional heating systems that primarily warm the air, <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">infrared heating warms people and surfaces directly rather than heating the air first.<\/span> This makes it particularly well suited to large, open spaces such as churches, where maintaining a comfortable air temperature can be challenging and inefficient.<\/p>\n<p>The new system was installed over summer 2025, helping St Luke\u2019s take an important step towards becoming a fully electric site.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>More than just a heating upgrade<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The impact has been about much more than simply changing the way the church is heated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">According to Rev Gareth, the difference in comfort has helped transform the experience of being at St Luke\u2019s and, importantly, its relationship with the wider community.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cIt\u2019s transformed the community because we&#8217;re seeing more people come, more people feeling welcomed, and more people are joining us on a Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In the 12 months since the installation, attendance has grown by around 23%, with the improved comfort helping St Luke\u2019s create a warmer and more welcoming environment for worship, community activities and social gatherings.
