Herschel Halo: the market-leading infrared heating solution for heritage interiors in the transition to net zero
Proven Solutions for Heating Heritage and Historical Buildings
Our revolutionary Halo heaters are designed to provide targeted, far infrared warmth directly to the people who need it, avoiding the energy wastage of traditional heating systems that warm large volumes of air. These energy-efficient heaters are not only ideal for creating a comfortable environment but also particularly beneficial for historic interiors and artefacts, ensuring the preservation of valuable heritage.
Our sustainable, non-intrusive chandelier Halo heating solutions have been installed in churches and heritage buildings across the UK, Europe, North America and even Australia, with fantastic feedback on comfort and proven reductions in energy consumption. With fast warm-up times and minimal pre-heating required, Halo heaters offer savings that can exceed 50% when compared to conventional heating solutions like heat pumps or convection systems.

Advanced control with InfraSense to deliver improved comfort and efficiency
InfraSense, our pioneering, patented (UK Patent Number GB2631160) control technology for Halo, uses in-built sensors to provide large, historic spaces like churches with unprecedented levels of control and management of their heating system.
Continually measuring the average radiant temperature of heated zones under the heater, InfraSense uses smart algorithms to automatically adjust power levels to maintain set target temperatures. This ensures desired comfort levels are achieved whilst managing electricity costs as efficiently as possible.

No Other System Can Achieve This Level of Control
Halo heaters can be controlled individually or grouped into zones. The InfraSense touchscreen central control is extremely easy to use with the option of one touch manual power level selector (low, medium and high) or intelligent automatic mode to set and control a temperature. Lighting is also controlled via the central controller.
Herschel provides remote access and support from our UK based national service hub.

A Game-Changer for Bristol Church
St Matthew’s Church replaced its gas heating system with Herschel’s Halo heaters to meet the Church of England’s 2030 net-zero target. Four bespoke Halo 7.8kW heaters were installed in September 2022 and offered significant reductions in energy usage, with heating costs reduced to under £20 per service.
Following this, an independent performance reviewof the Herschel Halo Installation was commissioned by the Church of England. This confirmed the significant savings in energy usage, CO2 emissions, and energy bills, with the Halo system requiring just 30 minutes to pre-heat compared to 3 hours for the gas system. The congregation appreciated the visual design of the system, and it was noted to provide comfortable heating without risking damage to sensitive church artifacts.
As a result, St Matthew’s Church plans to extend the installation of Herschel’s radiant heaters to other areas within the church.
Why Do Churches Choose Infrared for Their Church Heating Solution?
Heating a church efficiently can be challenging, especially in large or historic buildings. Infrared heating offers a modern, cost-effective solution that keeps congregations warm while reducing energy use and supporting sustainability goals. Explore the key benefits below to see why so many churches are making the switch.
- Infrared (radiant) systems directly heat objects and people in a space as opposed to heating the air and circulating it, thereby saving energy;
- Reduced carbon footprint – with the correct energy supply (any form of renewable energy or green tariff ) infrared heating can be run on a zero-carbon basis;
- Enables a much more consistent, comfortable temperature for the congregation;
- Quick, simple installation – infrared heating simply needs an electricity supply and can be wall or ceiling mounted in the correct place (portable solutions also available);
- No requirement for maintenance checks;
- Highly controllable – simple operation to ensure the right people and spaces are heated at the right times with no wasted energy;
- Solid-state, no moving parts – long life solutions;
- No noise;
- Choose between zero light and warm glow heaters;
- Infrared heating warms the building fabric itself helping to preserve buildings and reduce damp levels.

The Perfect Fit for Smaller Spaces
The Herschel Halo Mini delivers the distinctive elegance and reliable warmth of the Herschel Halo in a compact form, perfect for smaller spaces such as side aisles and chancels as well as lower-ceilinged spaces such as choir pews. Halo Mini has been developed in response to increasing demand for a smaller sized model of our stunning chandelier-style heater, to complement Halo. With the option to add dimmable LED lights and stunning decorative finishes, the Halo Mini provides the ideal heating for those spaces too small for the regular Halo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes the Heritage Heating range will work well in providing comfortable warmth during cold winters and the Herschel Heritage team will ensure the required number of heaters are specified in accordance with your requirements.
In the installation at St Matthew’s, the Halo heater specification totals 31.2 kW (on full power). This compares to their existing central heating (at St Matthew’s) of 186kW. So far (during October/ November 2022) the results show that Halo is providing comfort at 1/3 of the total power, and therefore we do not anticipate any problems in dealing with colder temperatures at full power for St Matthew’s or any other church or heritage property.
The Heritage Heaters can be installed by qualified electricians, providing a non-intrusive installation for building managers with no skill shortage issues. As part of the Heritage Specification Service we provide, we will find an installer near you to carry out the work.
The technology used within Heritage Heaters is far infrared. This is different from the technology used by other more ‘traditional radiant heaters’ from other providers, which have typically used shortwave infrared technology and the feeling of comfort from far infrared is a much more gentle feeling of warmth, ideal for the heating of people. We use the analogy of watering a tender plant with a hose. The old technology is akin to the hose being on ‘jet’, highly targeted, whereas the technology in Halo is akin to the hose being on ‘fine mist’ – everything gets gently wetted (or gently and comfortably heated).
