Heating St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne, with Bespoke Halo Heaters
Background
St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne stands as a historic landmark, welcoming visitors for over a century. However, like many other heritage buildings, the cathedral faced significant challenges in maintaining a comfortable indoor climate, particularly during colder months. St Paul’s Cathedral’s existing radiant heaters were ineffective, outdated, and were not in line with their sustainability goals for the cathedral.
The Light Up St Paul’s project was “A once-in-a-generation project to provide net-zero Halo Candelabra for the Cathedral“. A key goal of the project was to introduce an efficient heating system that not only provided effective warmth, but also respected the cathedral’s aesthetic’s and long-term environmental responsibility. To achieve this, St Paul’s Cathedral chose to install Herschel Halo heaters, which were completely customised to perfectly match the cathedral’s interiors, that not only provide an efficient source of direct heating, but also provide energy-efficient lighting.

Solution
To provide an effective and energy-efficient heating solution for St Paul’s Cathedral, eight bespoke Halo heaters were installed within the Cathedral.

Bespoke Halo Design
Designing the Decorative Panels
The Halo decorative side-panels were custom-designed to match the heraldic symbols of the St Paul’s crest. Using Herschel’s ultra-precise laser cutting machine, these symbols were then cut into the panels and shaped for each Halo that was built for the cathedral.

Designing the Custom Grill
As part of the fully bespoke Halo design, the grill was also custom designed to blend in perfectly with the Cathedral interior. The grill design features the cross symbol found within St Paul’s crest. The combination of the custom panels and grill make the Halo heaters truly unique.

Final Halo Design
Designed specifically for St Paul’s Cathedral, the Halo cleverly incorporates the Cathedral’s iconic symbols within the custom grill, the bespoke side-panels, and along the top box. LED lighting was also included to provide the Halo with a dual-purpose of not only heating a cold space but to also provide additional lighting where it was much needed. The colour of the Halo can also be customised, in this case, the Halos are painted gold to fit seamlessly into the historic interior of the Cathedral. Herschel’s highly revolutionary InfraSense control system was also fitted to automate the heating schedules for each Halo individually, giving an unrivalled level of control and usability.
