Infrared Heating System for The Old Century Chapel in Meerane, Germany
Background
The Old Cemetery Chapel in Meerane, Germany, was looking for a sustainable heating solution that would not compromise the uniqueness of the historic interior under any circumstances, but rather restore it to its former glory during the extensive restoration work. In light of the environmental and energy crisis, a detailed investigation into possible heating solutions was carried out under the direction of architect Elisabeth Scholz, the chairman of the board Dr Peter Ohl, and with the involvement of several key stakeholders. After examining the options for an infrared heating system, the offer from Herschel Infrared was recommended in November 2022 and subsequently selected by the support group as the preferred heating solution.

Herschel was involved in the process throughout the project, from initial specification and planning through to installation. This ensured that any issues that arose were resolved and a seamless installation was possible.
Solution
The solution for The Old Cemetery Chapel in Meerane was a Herschel church infrared heating system, which included the new and revolutionary Herschel Halo and the stunning Herschel Pulsar heaters in a white finish.

Manufactured in our European manufacturing facility, the Halo is a bespoke, lightless chandelier heater designed specifically for listed buildings to complement the aesthetics of the monument while preserving the historic interior. The powerful 7.8 kW Halo has been designed to incorporate LED lighting to provide an effective, highly efficient heating source that also enhances the ambience of the chapel through illumination.
The Herschel Pulsar is a stunning, lightless infrared heater that is available in a white or black finish. To blend in with the aesthetics of the Old Cemetery Chapel, the white 1.8 kW Pulsar heaters were installed in front of the outer vaulted niches of the interior. The Pulsar heaters are designed to be suspended from high ceilings and in large rooms to provide a good supply of radiant heat.

The Pulsars are an elegant, space-saving solution that blends into the chapel and is accompanied by the innovative Halo as the centrepiece.

The Herschel Halo and Pulsar heating system is documented in the commemorative publication ‘Die Alte Friedhofskapelle in Meerane 1873 – 2023’. We would like to thank Dr Peter Ohl and the publishing house Förderkreis Friedhof Meerane e. V. We would also like to thank Henry Richter, Meerane, for providing the photos. The chapel is used as a reference study for church heating systems throughout Germany and other countries.
