Why Infrared for Social Housing?

Infrared heating offers an affordable, future-proof heating system, helping providers address the challenges of fuel poverty with improved energy efficiency, comfort and healthier living environments.

Far Infrared is radiant heat which we ourselves as human beings naturally emit, and is the same heat we feel from an environment warmed by the sun; it is completely natural and 100% safe.

Far infrared heats the building and warms the walls, minimising the problems of damp and mould, a major issue in many social housing environments.

Far infrared minimises airflow, reducing the circulation of dust and allergens and creating a healthier living environment.

Zero servicing requirement utilising long-life components.

Installation is straightforward, non-intrusive and hassle-free. Our infrared panels can be wall- or ceiling-mounted and connect directly to your existing electrical supply.

A Life Cycle Assessment showed that infrared adds less embodied carbon to the environment than a heat pump.

Unprecedented ability to zone and control, minimising energy use, with real-time energy monitoring for residents and housing providers.

Introducing Herschel Comfort VarioPower™

With integrated InfraSense® precision control – the world’s smartest, most efficient and most sustainable infrared heating system

Comfort VarioPower

Brand new for 2026, our Comfort VarioPower™ heating system features InfraSense®, the first control system of its kind. InfraSense® utilises advanced sensor technology that maps and measures the average radiant temperature of the surfaces heated by the infrared heater, the relative humidity level, air quality and presence of people.

The readings produce an “operative*” temperature which is used to control the output of the heater to maximise human comfort levels and minimise energy costs.

*Operative temperature is calculated as an average of air temperature and mean radiant temperature (MRT), providing a more accurate measure of thermal comfort.

The InfraSense® Difference

Intelligent Heating Control

Herschel InfraSense®, our highly innovative patented control system (UK Patent Number GB2631160), brings automated heating to social housing developments, delivering comfort in the most efficient way possible by combining advanced sensing with intelligent automation. InfraSense® delivers unrivalled precision and flexibility.

Air temperature alone is only one reading of thermal comfort. The temperature of the surrounding environment (the “Mean Radiant Temperature”) also has a significant impact on how warm or cold you feel. This is especially important with infrared heaters as they directly warm the target area.

InfraSense® goes beyond conventional air and black bulb thermostats by monitoring both the mean radiant temperature (MRT) and air temperature – providing a true indicator of perceived warmth (this average is the operative temperature).

Set a target temperature for each zone – InfraSense® automatically adjusts heater power to maintain optimal comfort. Zones can be individual rooms or areas within a room or a large open space. No other system can measure and control the effective heated area of infrared heaters with such accuracy.

Only occupied zones are heated, ensuring consistent comfort and no wasted energy on empty spaces.

Smart algorithms prevent wasted energy by avoiding over or under-heating and reducing power when full output isn’t needed to maintain the target temperature.

InfraSense® is available as an easy install Wi-Fi IoT solution or hard-wired to our control hub. Data from the system is stored securely in the cloud.

Independently verified tests demonstrate that Comfort VarioPower™ with InfraSense® delivers a 23% saving on energy consumption over a market leading convection heater. Significant additional savings can be achieved by using our other smart features in InfraSense®, including presence detection, zoning, use with our Energy Storage System and integration with time of use tariffs.

Healthier Homes: Infrared fights damp and mould

Awaab’s Law introduces clear legal responsibilities for social housing landlords to investigate and resolve serious housing hazards, including damp and mould, within strict timeframes. The law represents a major change in accountability and responsibility, setting higher standards for maintaining safe, healthy living conditions for tenants.

One of the most common causes of damp and mould in homes is condensation. Condensation occurs when warm, moist air hits a cold surface. If left untreated it can develop into black mould, exposure to which can result in serious health hazards for occupants, as well as causing damage to building fabric and interiors.

Infrared heating gently warms people, objects and the fabric of the building (the ceilings, floors and walls) directly rather than warming the air. By maintaining a higher temperature in the material of a building and a lower temperature in the air, moisture is discouraged. As a result, moisture is less likely to settle on surfaces, helping to discourage the conditions in which damp and mould develop.

By heating homes with infrared technology, landlords can reduce the risk of damp and mould issues, helping to improve living conditions for tenants and meet the higher housing standards expected under Awaab’s Law.

Radiant environments are healthier environments.

Why Infrared for Care Homes?

Our range of far infrared panel heaters are used by a number of care home providers, and provide a cost-effective way of heating areas without the need for an expensive centralised heating system.

Panels can be ceiling-mounted, removing the heating from Priority 1 to Priority 3 and reducing the risk of injury. They can be mounted with anti-ligature fittings where required.

Far infrared is natural for the body and is frequently used in the wellness sector. This can be a major point of consideration in buildings whose occupants sit for long periods of the day.

Each room can operate as a separate zone and be controlled by our specially designed range of thermostat control options or as part of an existing building management system, meaning either localised control or remote control from a central location. There is no single point of failure, each panel is separately fused.

The infrared heat improves thermal comfort levels because every part of the room is heated to an even level, removing cold spots and creating a more comfortable (non-stuffy) temperature.

Unlike convector heaters there is minimal air movement which results in less dust and pollutants, especially helpful to asthma and allergy sufferers.

Our panels are zero maintenance with long life expectancies and have been proven to save energy compared to convector heaters. They can be used as a complete heating solution or as a supplement to an underperforming legacy heating system.

Our full range of infrared panel heaters for care home and social housing can be viewed on this link.  These include our UK manufactured Comfort range plus our Select XLS and Krystal panel ranges alongside thermostat controls.

“The IR3s work exceptionally well”

“The IR3s that we’re using work really well in the space because it has that industrial heritage, so the IR3 looks really good in the space and works exceptionally well…. They’re easy to install and they’re reliable.”

“As part of the Design, Technical and Innovation team of Clarion housing group we were tasked to find the very best in technologies for the following categories; sustainability, MEP, Modern Methods of Construction, Digital, Specification.

In our extensive market research we looked into all manner of heating system for both water and environment, each that need to compliment the sustainable aspirations of our new buildings. It is in this space that Herschel’s infrared panels and Mixergy tanks were assessed in a plethora of scenarios.

We found the system to be not only high performing for future tenants but offers a range of additional features such as positive reduction in mould and improvement in air quality. The cost of installation was comparable to that of a fossil fuel installation but when accompanied with PV on roof and battery systems this was thought to be one of the best offers on the market for Latimer. Therefore, we included the recommendation of Herschel infrared panels for all future buildings to be examined by contractors across the land”.
